Jinwar, a village in northeast Syria completed in 2018, is home exclusively to women and their children. It was founded as a refuge — a place where women could live independently and rebuild their lives after war, loss, or hardship.
The residents constructed the mud-brick houses with their own hands and now sustain the community by farming the surrounding land and raising livestock. Decisions are made collectively, and daily labour is shared among everyone.
More than a settlement, Jinwar has become a symbol of self-reliance. For the women who live there, it offers something that had long felt out of reach: safety, autonomy, and a genuine sense of belonging.
